REferring of course to countries where this is the law or custom.
What an excellent question!
Of course the obvious answer is "all those reasons".
Very sad whatever the reason(s).
The "God" you are referring to did not make the rules, man did. Man enforces the rules as he sees fit after he invents them. In the western, so called "free world", we are no different than Islamics. Only the rules we made up are different. Why is it illegal to possess, cultivate, or use marijuana? After all it was created by this same "God" that created woman. Yet we are supposed to cover it up. Man makes the decisions, not "God". It's the same here as is it is everywhere, only the invented laws are different. That's why crystal meth is illegal while alcohol is not. Both come from "God's" creations and both are manufactured by "God's" creations (humans) to produce mind altering effects in "God's" creations (humans). Man made a decision to make one illegal and the other not, yet both are destructive forces. There are many paradoxes in both religion and man's invented laws. If suicide is a religious sin, then why would smoking not be?
I don't understand your agrument. We are talking about the abuse of another human being here, not growing marijuana.
It's called a 'reference' for analogical purposes. Allows people to understand concepts and how things can be alike. Remember how they used to give the IQ tests that said things like "glove is to hand like man is to ..." and then would list items like "coat" "car" "dog" and "house"? Intellect is measured in your ability to relate things.
so, gender abuse is to marijuana use as apples are to oranges?
I take it you have trouble with concepts and analogies. Not uncommon. A lot of people do. Lots of people only like teeny-tiny words. If you use one they don't know - rather than expand their vocabulary so they can follow the nuance of a conversation they make fun of you. Part of the anti-intellectual movement. Try this one: "gender abuse is to stick like like stupid is to anti-intellectualism."
I have a masters degree in Philosophy so I don't need any lessons from you. I merely thought your argument didn't make any sense. I thought you just didn't get it, in the venacular.
It occurs to me that it wasn't so long ago that women in this country were expected to cover their legs to the ankles, they would wear hats or bonnets when they were outside the home. Not entirely different to the laws to which the question refers. Yes, those were social customs, not laws but the penalties for breaking those conventions could be harsh. Being a social outcast, not being able to make a marriage perhaps, maybe not being able to hold down a job. Our society has moved on and religion has taken a back seat, otherwise it's entirely possible that things would be going on the same way.
In my experience, and through things I have seen and read, many, if not most Muslim women choose to wear their robes and headscarves. They are as committed to their religion as men, and as it is required they do it, happily so. Some sects of the Jewish faith expect women to cover their hair and legs also, but we tend not to feel they are being oppressed.
That really doesn't answer the question. WHY are they required to do it? What could be the purpose except to insult God by saying that his creations are not fit to be seen by men. I could be wrong, but I haven't read of any Jews these days stoning or murdering women who didn't cover their hair or legs. By the way, what sacrifices are men required to make for their Islamic faith, as long as you brought it up? the men do what the hell they want, dictate all the rules to the women and go their merry way. And if they are so weak that they can't restrain themselves if they see a woman's hair then they need to talk to a psychiatrist and find out where in their development they got stalled. Perhaps at age 14? Yeh, yeh, yeh, I've heard all that crap about happy little muslim women joyfully wearing their burkas. Why then do they throw them off as soon as it's safe to do so? Like when the americans invaded Afghanistan? Why do they rush to go to work and to study and to read what they want? It's all BS made up by the men who can't give up control and their favored position. They can do as many women as they want and the woman has nothing to say about it. What kind of a religion rewards matyrs by promising them Bl.. Jobs in "Heaven" and by VIRGINS non the less. I mean, how infantile is that? I guess women matyrs don't get to go to heaven? Do they get hot beach boys as a reward?
I could have answered it in a better way,if it was known by now,as to why apple could be eaten raw, unpealed bananas should be diet of chimpanzee. So far he seemed to fart but Likely Ahmadi-Nijad will sow up in university lecture in US.
On this specific subject of covering head & body,if done selective than South Asian community is HOT-HOT SALSA, People often have political agenda to compare between Middle East & West.
The major factor could be thickness of skin & climatic environment where such communities exist.
I'm sure on a blistery ice storm day,you would find layered clothings & Jackets, while Middle eastern women might still be walking in breezy Abaya.
Habits of generations don't change that soon, often these become part of a culture.
If some one thinks Taleban were rude & enforced Burqa on women. If some one considers courage enough to raise Burqa issue, Than please donate some standard quality of shoes, which could sustain cold & heat of Afghanistan,as trail of kids following a Burqa Clad women have no shoes.
May be by live sound & pictures being received by operators of Drones & predators would confirm, what I just said.
No rush,no hurry.
Time & trails are key things to retain handy.success or failures of "WAR ON TERROR" can't be time stamped for start & end.
Its an on going phenomenon,Please pray for solders & Civilians alike.
Yes,taunting for Burqa or dressing went in the same time,so as a surrounding argument, which might have helped forming opinion to go to war,may not put aside. Irshad manji debates of women circumsession was another sizling sensation + few other media gimmicks to add fuel to fire, some times they come as noble as,Kicking the hell out of a burning man & heroes cherished on Times Square.
Why the heck a Scottish dude would be brought on to Times Square in the first Place?
Becu'z Murdouch lobby is stronger than, his rival Mugal.
I'm just Wondering if Mugal & Mughal is a same thing or not?
Near as I can tell, both Mugal and Mughal are corruptions of "Mongol", so i think they are the same thing.
Up until the 1970's even Catholic women had to cover their head when they went to church. Humans are STILL very primitive creatures. Why do some of them get so upset when told they may have evolved from primates? I don't get upset. Does that mean I am superior to the majority of my species?
What do you mean by "not so long ago"?
I think we are close to 100 years beyond that, at least in the UK.
Possibly starting with "La Belle Epoque" bu certainly by the 1920's Flapper girls, there was a lot of change from Victorian values.
Fashion does what fashion does, religion has not that much influence.
Even in the Gerogian days, there may have been a full cover up of legs, but there ws no shortage of bare shoulders and "heaving busoms :)" on display.
I too have seem similar things about girls saying they are happy to wear the traditional garb, but I wonder if those who are not would be likely to go on TV and risk wrath of the fundies by saying so?
And whether happy to do so or not, they should never be in a position of being forced to do so.
To many people have fought and died to safeguard freedom from all manner of tyrany for us to take anyone's loss or lack of freedom lightly.
In THIS country, it used to be an allowable defense for a rapist to claim "I couldn't help myself" for one reason or another. I always thought the trail should stop for a competency hearing--after all, if he truly couldn't help himself, he couldn't possible be legally competent, right? So appoint the victim his conservator of his assets.
that is truly shameful.
like that fact that until recently it was not possible for a man to rape his wife. It was considered his right to have sex when he wanted and her duty to provide it.
(Now that could have resulted in some interesting cases now we have same sex marriages.)

[1 point] 128 days ago by deleted user ReplyOut of curiosity, do the men have to waer those silly hats, or is that through choice?
I know Jewish men are supposed to cover their heads for some religious reason, but those little hat they wear only seem to do half the job. Is the symbolism all that really matters?
And then there are the Hasidim.

Well these folks must be getting close to the top of the league in the silly hat stakes :)
Can't help thinking those big fur hats must be mighty hot in the middle eastern climate!
But probably nice and toasty in Russia.
Almost forgot, some people I know say they find those black robed ladies, with just the eyes showing, very sexy. Does not work for me personally, but it seems for some it has the opposite effect to that intended, something about the mystery, and only having the eyes and a vague idea of general shape.
Something like the traditional british schoolgirls uniform I suppose. Originally designed to be as un-sexy as possible on purpose, it was not too long until it became one of the top fantasy outfits for many adults, though of course St trinians probably has a lot to answer for there.
