They're not the same as third world countries, but the mortality rate in the US is typically listed as being higher than most industrialized nations.
A pretty decent article explains some of the variables:

Oh ... but don't forget ... we have the BEST HEALTH CARE IN THE WORLD! Just ask the Republicans and the insurance companies ...
Well, duh! THEY have the best in the world, and they are the only ones that count!!
:)
While not the best in the world it is certainly can not be evaluated by the fundamentally flawed study by the WHO. For the detailed analysis of the study and why its rankings are meaningless visit the Cato Institute website.
Before you visit, please be aware that the Cato Institute is a notoriously right-wing 'think-tank' policy setter.
US infant mortality rates are nowhere near the mortality rates in 3rd world countries.
In the US there are 5 infant deaths for every 1,000 live births. Compare that to...
Brazil: 16 per 1,000
Turkey: 22 per 1,000
Kenya: 33 per 1,000
Bangladesh: 41 per 1,000
Ethiopia: 52 per 1,000
Liberia: 65 per 1,000
Same as third world countries? Try again.
Which is why I did not bother voting in this poll. The question is wrong.
Liberia has 65 per 1000, and we have 5 per 1000. I'd say that's pretty damn close considering the difference between the two countries.
This site show comparisons in Infant Mortality. It shows the USA at 6.4 with a life expectancy of 78. It is interesting that Canada is 4.6 with a life expectancy of 80.3. If Universal Health Care is so bad, as says many Republicans, I wonder why we die less and live longer? Hmmm.

It's those doctors over the border savin' our lives all the time. We keep them so busy they don't have time to tend to their own.
They meant bad for THEM and their investments in Big Pharma, et al.
Bottle feeding with S-26 formula would ensure consistent vitamins and minerals and may help the health of infants.
LOL thats too funny!! I'm glad you have a sense of humor about all this. Isn't it amazing how a good laugh can make you less mad about all the wrong ideas people have. Like the people who think artificial feeding is better then nursing, since every well done study i've ever seen indicates otherwise. Well that and the fact that formula companies buy human milk to study it, and try to make their product "even closer" to it. I needed the good laugh thanks!
