You make roughly $40k, and with that salary you can buy a very, very nice three bedroom, two bath, 1800 square-foot house with a garage and fenced in yard. Just go down to the sheriff's auction and bid. Not to far from me is a subdivision that has many homes in foreclosure. It's called "Camelot," so you wouldn't feel so far from home ...

Not sure if you'll get this response or not, but here's an idea. £65k = $130k US (roughly). Calculating 5 years salary to comfortably pay for a 30 year mortgage (and allowing for property tax and insurance), any of these homes would be well within the affordable range. I tried to pick the more British sounding locations, to help with the transition and homesickness ... (lol)
Do bear in mind that I live in SW Ohio. (lol) $130k won't get you much on Long Island. But you'd feel comfortable with the landscape. The topography looks very much like Wales with trees.

What would you get if you make roughly £65K then? With that salary down near London you don't really get that much to be honest.
