Absolutely not. Carried to its extreme (I won't say ridiculous, because, well, you never know...) a parent would have to pay royalties on their child's genetic inheritance.

The European Society of Human Genetics issued recomendations in order to make the patent system more fair based on the principle that the structure and variations of genes and DNA fragments are discoveries and not inventions and should not therefore be patentable.

Unfortunately, things are a lot different in the USA and some companies that own the patents of some genes are blocking the research on their associated diseases...
