Do you think Mary, mother of Jesus of Nazareth, was actually a virgin at the time of his birth? Ask a Question

Of course not. Joe bought it though. He must have been a chump.

Maybe he was just a nice guy?

Chances are if he had thrown her out she could have been stoned to death for promiscuity.

I wonder what happened to her cousin?

She gave birth a bit earlier to a boy called John, later to achieve fame as John-the-Baptist, before losing his head.

So you have a young virginal girl staying with cousin and husband. Cousin is "heavy with child", so husband is probably not getting any ... hmmm, wonder if John and Jesus were more closely related than people think?

John the Baptist and Jesus were cousins. John was the son of Mary's older sister (whose name escapes me at the moment - maybe Ann?). But heyyy - the Mormons believe that Jesus and Satan are brothers. First time I heard that I thought they were being figurative by saying good and evil are born of the same source. Nope. BLOOD brothers. Born of God and Mary. I presume they believe Jesus was the older brother though, since she was a virgin and all.

Either way, the guy had some really good teachings. Now if we could just get the modern day CHRISTIANS to pay attention to what he actually SAID - things would be better in this world. If (and when) he actually returned they have him locked up for insanity and scream that he was a liberal and unpatriotic. He did preach pacifism.

You have your Mormon theology incorrect. They are brothers like you and I are "brothers" (i.e., both "sons" of God), but not both born of God and Mary.

Not according to the Mormon missionaries I spoke with. When they said it I was so shocked I asked for clarification and made them repeat it twice. BLOOD brothers. God as the father, Mary as the mother.

Your first mistake was trusting a couple of 19 year olds to be experts in esoteric church doctrine. ;o)

I can personally assure you that there is no doctorine of the LDS church (mormon) that claims Jesus and Satan are BLOOD brothers. Only spirit brothers, ie you, me and everyone else are brothers

John was the son of Elisabeth and Zacharia. Elizabeth is generally thought to have been a cousin of Mary, however the original wording is not totally clear, and appears to translate as something like "kinswoman", so it is open to interpretation.

RC sources have information claiming to know who Mary's mother (Anne) was, and that Anne's sister was Elizabeth's mother. I have no idea where they got this info from though!

Well, we'll never be able to get the DNA for a paternity test. I guess we'll just have to accept the story we've heard as gospel. No pun intended.

However, if I were Jewish or Hindu I'd probably have to say I don't know. To someone that hasn't been indoctrinated it sounds a little preposterous.

A little? It's impossible.

Ahhhh, step right up, Sir. The line of those who haven't been indoctrinated starts over there. Save your stubs. There'll be a drawing for prizes right after the show.

That's a logical fallacy Chipper called "argument from ignorance." The fact that we won't be able to get a paternity test doesn't mean we have to accept the story we've heard. After all, we don't accept the stories of the Greek gods as "gospel," right?

LoL....

The stories of the Greek gods are mythology. =]

Precisely. And if you were Jewish or Hindu or Buddhist, you would say the story of the virgin birth is likewise.

excellent point!

agreed

Many things in the gospels seem inpossible to a casual reader. The miracles, the resurrection, the floating off to heaven bit, etc.

I remember talking to a japanese person who had read the gospels as a school project. He had not realised they were supposed to be historical when he read them, and thought they were just a good fantasy story!

It was just recently that I learned that Catholics believe that Mary not only had the virgin birth of Jesus but that she remained a virgin until her death. Does anyone know where the scriptural basis for this is?

Catholics don't need a scriptural basis, because they have a living oracle. ;o)

15-year-old girl:Hey Ma.....I got bad news...I'm knocked up. But I didn't do ANYTHING, HONEST!!!

Ma: Well, but if we can make the NEIGHBORS believe it, maybe we can still marry you off to some old, poor SOB who's desperate for a wife but can't afford one......Lemme think about it....Yeah, I think it will fly.

Its good to see that all the atheists are so well read on the bible. Some things you just have to take on FAITH. That is why they call it that. You may believe I'm a fool for believing but I believe it is you that are the fools. A person who doesn't have a spiritual side is only half a person in my opinion.

Believing in WHAT crazy? Is everyone who doesn't have the same faith as you going to hell? Are they only half people... or are they less than people?

I don't care what you believe in but don't go putting words in my mouth. Did I even mention hell? Half people? You might want to try finishing your education and then reading my comments again.

Why do you assume that someone who holds a different viewpoint is an atheist?

There are as many varieties of people who don't completely agree with the christian bible as there are of those who do, probably more.

Many agnostic types have a genuine interest in the views of christians and non-christians.

Being honest enough to say "I don't know, but I am interested" does not make someone an atheist, which is someone who believes there is no god (or gods).
