The TV reports the news. The citizens make the news.
outstanding answer!!
Only on TV shows like "Cops." Ask the Brits. According to them, THEY'RE always the bad guys in American movies. I've never noticed a predominance of black bad-guys on TV since the 60s - where the bad guys were either black, or hippies.
I always suspected that "Cops" trolled black neighborhoods alot more than white ones...you are rigth though, bad-guys on tv are usually hispanic now.

Whenever the cops pulled him over, he'd fake a British accent and apologize like crazy for forgetting his passport at his friend's house. He'd tell them he was from Procter & Gamble's (based in Cincinnati) London office, and always stayed with another P & G executive when he came to town. Then he'd ask which law he'd broken, tell the cops it was their fault for having everyone drive on the wrong side of the road. He'd say they'd laugh like crazy and let him go every time ... (lmao)

Absolutely boggles American minds to hear a British accent come from the mouth of a black guy. Cops stroll up to a window, expecting attitude (you've seen 'Cops,' I know). And then they meet an Englishman. They'll help you in any way they can. Did know a lady who immigrated here from south of London once. Pulled an illegal U-turn. Pulled over, she told the cop it was legal in England. He said, "Nope. I've been to England. It's illegal there, too." So here's hoping you only meet the untraveled variety. (lol)

You never see the stories about the rich white kids at Yale who do drugs. or about the rich white kids who commit hate crimes, or...well, you don't.
What TV news do you watch? I see plenty of white people being featured in the news for their crimes.
Don't think that was the question.
I was referring more to how people of color are portrayed in dramatic presentations, which are a much larger portion of TV programming. The black kid is a mugger or doper, the Latino is undocumented, the white guy is the one who saves the day. They call them stereotypes.
And Native Americans like me are just as stereotyped. "Smokum peace pipe?" "How!"
"You never see the stories about some rich white guy who beats his wife..."
"You never see the stories about the rich white kids at Yale who do drugs. or about the rich white kids who commit hate crimes..."
Those comments just made me wonder from what planet you get your TV news. The TV news we watch here on Planet Earth feature plenty of white people committing crimes.
Unless of course those comments were meant in sarcasm...
I don't think the question was limited to news.
I don't watch news. Programming, however, which I do watch, and which makes up a larger share of the broadcast hours and spectrum, does represent an unbalanced view of people of color as predominately criminal.
NOT THE NEWS. NO TV news is reliable. Not from any network.
I'm with you. It said "American TV" - "American News" is completely different from "American TV" - that implies entertainment television.
