I find it troubling that there were people on the site who had never heard the expression "ecological footprint". It seems that introducing them to the concept was yet another plus for the questions related to that subject.

I must confess I hadn't though about it in those terms... You got a point there! :) The only carbon released is the one that's already in the atmosphere (not that that's particularly good since we already have too much of it). So, OK, count me in then. ;) (Though I maintain my reserves about producing energy through combustion - that's a backward technology and we need to focus on more sustainable alternatives.)

I guess it depends on what fuel we're talking about. Is it methane? Hydrogen? Sure biologically produced fuels like methane, biodiesel or ethanol are better than fossil non-renewable fuels but they only address the scarcity of the later and we definitely need alternatives that would reduce the release of more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. So I would favour a technology with the smallest carbon footprint possible: I'd be all for hydrogen production and I wouldn't oppose algae-produced methane but I would be less enthusiastic about it.
